The Island family bio v. 6.0. Dateline the Island, January 24 2013. Updated by Kelly and Rachel

We are The Island. This is our family journal.

The Island is a thriving poly family of eighteen, bound together by design, desire and destiny. As a family, we'll be six years old this spring. Our founding core group of three lesbian couples came together as the Island in early 2007. (March 28 is our official family anniversary.) We are the largest family within a "constitutional union" of poly families, each family independent but ruled by a common constitution and united by a common set of principles, beliefs and goals. Together, we make a closed polyfidelitous Magic Circle of twenty-four adults. Among us our families also have eight children and one of us even has grandchildren. In age we range from 22 (that's me, Kelly, I'm the youngest) to 51. Most of us are 20-something or 30-something.

There are five Courts within the Island, each consisting of a crowned head and those Island subjects collared to them by bonds of fealty: ownership, marriage, submission or some combination. Our courts range in size from three members to six, and no, we are not feudal or medieval in either style or outlook, we're not members of SCA, or denizens of a Renaissance Faire. Our Court system is simply an elegant, fun and useful way to organize our interwoven poly and power-differential relationships. Our Courts are a little like nuclear families within our extended family. The Pearl, one of our two partner families, recently (June 1, 2012) became officially an integral but autonomous Court of the Island, bringing the Island's population to eighteen.

The Island shares one member in common with our other partner family, the Hexagon. We also share a complex web of business, personal and intimate family partnerships. We're planning for the twenty-four of us to be one deeply interconnected Circle for the rest of our lives, and we're committed to making that happen. Some of us have known each other forever, some for only a few years, some of us are related by blood and DNA, some are from different countries, cultures and continents, but we're a family. Because we love each other, because we're committed to each other for life, and because we're committed to the same fundamental design for living. We have a vision of our future. We're making our dreams come true.

The Island is organized as a miniature constitutional monarchy, combined with a radically egalitarian pirate democracy. On this past New Year's Eve we elected a new Head of Family, known among us as the "Queen of the Island." Our new Queen is Rachel, our retiring Queen was Lucia. We identify ourselves as lesbian, gay, queer, kinky, bisexual, polysexual, pansexual, hetero and hetero friendly, sex positive feminist, polyamorous and polyfidelitous, and we're involved with dominance and submission, consensual power-differential relationships, group sex, kink, fetish and BDSM--but we're not fundamentally about any of those things. We're all about building a strong loving family, filled with love and happiness and support for everyone, and capable of helping every single member of our family live the life of their dreams. Everything we do is just a pathway toward that goal.

These are the members of the Island in some kind of semi-meaningful order: Rachel Caitlin Lucia Stella Veronica Anna Daniel Joshua Eva Kelly Ciara Zizi Maria Gioia Natalia Dante Francesca Teresa. And the Hexagon: Michael Maria Mark Bella Hawkeye Angel Maravilha. Yes, those two Marias are the same person, she's a member of both families. Every member of the Island, and the Hexagon, is free to write anything they want here, about anything, anytime they want. Posts are signed by the author or authors, or sometimes by the entire Island. Sometimes we write a lot, sometimes we're all too busy, or not in the mood, or just thinking. Sometimes whoever is posting is speaking for themselves, sometimes for everyone. Sometimes this is clear, sometimes maybe not. If you're curious, ask.

I'm Kelly! I'm the principal journalist for this family journal, but anyone on the Island might turn up here. My email is the one up above for comments complaints compliments & questions, but if you know any of us, of course feel free to email them anytime. If you want to reach out to someone in particular and don't know how, message them here on LJ or just email me, Kelly. It's Rachel's birthdate listed above, because she's the eldest founding member of the Island and our new Queen. The Island has two other LJs: Stella's at http://stelladellasera.livejournal.com/ and Caitie's at http://kissmecaitlin.livejournal.com/. The Hexagon is also represented on LJ by Maria's blog, http://ravenna_amorosa.livejournal.com/. Those three blogs are older, bigger and more interesting than this blog, but they're in suspended animation.

Insulanova is the only active journal for the entire Island.
